Scumbag Steve was a yearbook-style photo of a young man wearing a sideways cap, a striped sweater, and the face of someone who has borrowed your charger and lost it. He was the official portrait of small betrayals: 'Borrows $20, never mentions it again,' 'Says he's on his way, sends a text two hours later saying he fell asleep.' He died in 2013, outlived by the real Steve — who grew up, took his photo's fame in stride, and proved that a sideways hat does not a destiny make. The betrayals continued without him.
