Yanny vs Laurel was a two-second audio clip that some people heard as 'Yanny' and others as 'Laurel,' and in May 2018 it became the spiritual sequel to The Dress — the internet dividing into two camps, each certain the other was lying. Scientists explained that the clip contained both frequencies, that age and hearing shaped the answer, and that neither side was wrong. The internet did not care about the science. It cared about being right. The meme died in June 2018, outlived by every argument it started. Say it again: Yanny. Now say Laurel. You're both right. That was the whole joke.
