Trollface was drawn in Microsoft Paint in 2008 by a DeviantArt user who wanted to illustrate what it felt like to prank someone. The face — a wide, smug grin with no jaw — became the official portrait of mischief: 'Problem?' it asked, after derailing a forum thread or posting a misleading link. It was the symbol of the troll, back when trolling meant harmless chaos instead of a profession. It died in 2013 when the word 'troll' became a job title and a whole industry moved into its house. The grin remains. The mischief does not.
