Expanding Brain took four panels of a head getting steadily larger — from a small, dim sphere to a glowing galaxy with eyes — to chart the escalating smugness of a single thought. 'Drink water,' the small brain says. 'Drink milk,' says the medium brain. 'Drink soup,' says the big brain. The fourth panel was always a galaxy-brain take so absurd it bent the format. It died in 2018, a year after it was born, the natural lifespan of any format that was always about escalation. There was nowhere left to escalate to. The brain simply expanded out of the frame.
