One Does Not Simply was a frame of Sean Bean as Boromir from The Lord of the Rings, explaining with great seriousness that one does not simply walk into Mordor. The internet took his warning and applied it to everything: one does not simply finish a bowl of cereal, one does not simply leave a party without saying goodbye. It was the meme of the impossible task, spoken with the authority of a man who had been to Mordor and knew the traffic was terrible. It died in 2014, outlived by the line itself, which now belongs less to Tolkien and more to every person who has ever stared at a pile of laundry. One does not simply fold it.
