Baby Yoda — known to the lore as Grogu — appeared in the first episode of The Mandalorian in November 2019 and became the most beloved creature on television within the hour: a fifty-year-old baby with enormous ears, a fondness for frogs, and the ability to make an entire galaxy coo. He was an instant merchandising empire, which is precisely what killed him as a meme: within a year, his face was on everything from lunchboxes to holiday sweaters, and the cuteness became currency. He died in 2021, not because anyone stopped loving him, but because loving him had become a transaction. He lives on, in every Funko Pop that will outlive us all.
