The Dress
February 26, 2015 — March 2015
“White and gold. Or blue and black. Never both.”
Obituary
The Dress was a photograph of a garment that looked white and gold to some people and blue and black to others, and in February 2015 it split the internet down the middle with the ferocity of a holy war. Families argued. Workplaces shut down. Scientists published papers. The debate was genuinely unwinnable — both sides saw what they saw, and neither could see the other. It died within a month, not because the question was answered, but because it became the standard way to prove that perception is personal. It remains the only meme in this cemetery that was the subject of peer-reviewed neuroscience. It was blue and black, by the way. Or it wasn't. We still can't be sure.
