On July 12, 2019, a teenager named Matty Roberts created a Facebook event: 'Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us.' Two million people RSVP'd. For two months the internet planned, joked, and bought tickets to a festival no one had organized. On September 20, 2019, approximately 150 people showed up. Two were arrested. No aliens were liberated. The meme died at the gate, gently, of anticlimax.
